The Art of Racing in the Rain, Garth Stein
I loved this book so much I gave it to my 83-year old mother-in-law who enjoyed reading it aloud to my 88-year old father-in-law; I understand there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. I totally get that.
If you love dogs, read this book. I’m not sure there is more to say. Yes, there is a great story beyond Enzo the dog, but the dog makes it. I read an article from the author who apparently had to switch agents or publishers because they all but told him what a flop a grown-ups book about a dog would be. Mr. Stein had a vision, his team did not - I’m SO glad Mr. Stein followed his instinct.
This book is remarkable, appropriate for nearly anyone (there is a dark undercurrent where an inappropriate teen makes false accusations, but this gets resolved and all ends well). There is love, romance, hope, and dreams in the story; and a dog. What more could a reader want.
TWO THUMBS UP FOR The Art of Racing in the Rain.
