The Giver, Lois Lowry
Love, Love, Love this book. Seriously, this is one of my all-time favorite books.
I was introduced to this book by my kids when they were much younger, we had a reading with mom time most evenings after dinner where they would sit around the floor or beside me and I would read aloud. My son, Adam, or maybe it was Kowboy, brought this author to our reading circle. Hunter was too young to have been the one to suggest this. I digress. One of the boys brought it up and we read it - and I have read it several times since; I own the copy and hope one day to read it to my grandbabies. Hmmm, I wonder if my fur grandbabies would like the book? I only have four-legged grands at this time.
The Giver is a dystopian look at life growing up in a highly disciplined, culling society where the children are simply moved into the areas of service that fit their predetermined skill set; for one, a very special child, they will take the place of the current Giver. It sounds like the best gig in town until it’s not.
I could read this story over and over and would highly recommend it to upper middle-grade and older individuals, including adults. (I saw the movie, it was good, but the book takes the cake.)
